Debt-settlement companies draw increasing criticism

Debt-settlement companies claim they can reduce borrowers' debts by negotiating with creditors. A growing group of lawmakers, regulators and consumer advocates say these companies exploit desperate borrowers, often leaving them deeper in debt.
